As the archivist at Liberty, Anna Buruma appreciates that the redefinition of the company and the things that it sells can be measured by the number of trips that the design department makes to the company's archive. Looking at the current Liberty of London product range, one could be forgiven for thinking that all the archive contains is an array of late 19th-century Art Nouveau woodblocks. How refreshing then, that we have a book that
concentrates on the post-war era of the 50s and 60s, 'a less well-recognised moment in Liberty's history, but perhaps no less significant,' says Buruma. By the 60s, the company courted high-end dress designers by producing exclusive fabric designs. Those by Bernard Nevill evoked a broader grammar of ornament in strident colourways and subtle shifts in tonality. But for its daily customers, the department store still functioned as the oriental bazaar, so that 'the well-to-do lady from Kent, the young television star, and the arty student from St. Martin's could come to Liberty and Co. to get their lengths of Thai silk, their Chinese jacket or their Japanese teacup'.
As this lavishly illustrated book demonstrates, the seemingly fixed nature of Liberty's historicised image is more malleable than it first appears and Buruma has documented a vision of the company that it should take note from.
